Lent is a journey with Jesus from Ash Wednesday to the beginning of Eastertide. Typically this is a season of repentance and re-establishing union with Christ through intentional fasting and feasting. As of Saturday, March 9, Daily Lenten Devotionals will be distributed for the 37 consecutive days. We invite you to journey with us as we intentionally engage in spiritual practice every day to prepare our hearts for Easter.

Throughout these days leading up to Resurrection Sunday, South will be on a journey with Jesus and the prophet Jonah. You may be wondering why Jonah? Well, when Jesus was begged by the Pharisees to give them a sign, he referred back to the prophet Jonah. He said, “No sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.” (Matthew 39b-41)

Today, we invite you to prepare for the Lenten sermon series on Jonah with a simple prayer of repentance and re-establishing your relationship with Jesus.

Place your hands palms down as a way to represent letting go of distractions or sins to make more space for Jesus. Talk with Jesus about what you are letting go of and why.

Then, turn your palms to the sky as a way to represent how you will open up to receiving what Jesus has for you in this season. Talk with Jesus about what you are hoping to receive from him during this season.
