Fall Afresh – Bethel Music & Jeremy Riddle | The Loft Sessioins
Awaken my soul, come awake
To hunger, to seek, to thirst
Awaken first love, come awake
And do as You did, at first
Spirit of the living God come fall afresh on me
Come wake me from my sleep
Blow through the caverns of my soul
Pour in me to overflow
To overflow
Yes Spirit
Come and fill this place
Let Your glory now invade
Spirit come and fill this place
Let your glory now invade
Spirit of the living God come fall afresh on me
Come wake me from my sleep
Blow through the caverns of my soul
Pour in me to overflow
This is a song that I have played at South Fellowship many times. It is so simple, and yet it expresses such a foundational longing of the human heart. I recall when I first began following Jesus; the gospel was so fresh and powerful that God’s presence easily moved my emotions. That is a wonderful feeling! Humans don’t seem to be wired to sustain such emotional ecstasy long term. The walk of faith can often feel like it loses some of its fervency as time goes on. It often feels like we’ve let God down by not being as excited as we once were. Is that really what is happening? Not necessarily. Just like with many areas of life, the initial emotions may change, but beyond them, there is a journey of faith that extends deeper than the surface emotions. There is an abiding joy that swells in the place of that ecstatic emotion.
Does that mean we shouldn’t seek emotional encounters with the living God? Not at all, that is why this song is so meaningful. We sing a song like this, asking the spirit to awaken us again to the emotions of his presence. As spirit-filled followers of God, we want to cultivate deep faithfulness to God AND fervent affections for God.
This song is a prayer that asks the Spirit to wake us up, because some of our dullness has nothing to do with the emotions wearing off. Some of the dullness of our emotions is the fact that other worries and idols are courting our emotions. Life has a way of offering us alternative pleasures that never satisfy. When we sing this song, we are asking the Spirit to wake up the affections we once had. Heartfelt encounters with Jesus along our faith journey have a way of recalibrating our souls to what is most important. So sing this song and let your emotions and longings soar as you sing.
