I certainly don't resemble a swan, but as this is nonetheless our corporate swan song, I want to leave you with what for me has been the motivating truth that drives everything I do.
Let me say first that I have been contributing devotionals at South for the last two years. I was drawn to participate after a conversation with Dan Elliot. I have been writing a daily devotional on Facebook for the last thirteen years, dedicated to the memory of my son John, who passed away in 2012. It seemed a perfect fit. (-B
There are two things that stand out for me that made being a part of the devotional crew special for me.
The first was insight. When given the chance to talk with others about scripture passages, repeatedly it was enlightening to discover other people's perspectives, and to realize that God does reach out personally to each one of us. Don't sell yourself short. Interact with others whenever you can. You may have a point of view that someone else desperately needs, and they may possess the same for you.
The second thing was Joy. We ALWAYS had fun. Giggling and chortling were standard fare for our meetings. Every week saw the need to shut the door so we didn't distract others. "The Joy of the Lord is our strength". It is.
Now back to that motivational truth that governs my life. When Jesus was tempted by Satan, his very first response was the following.
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Matthew 4:4
Jesus is the Bread of life. And you can never consume too much spiritual bread. Holy carbs are the best. And you will never have to worry about weight gain. God's Word only builds muscle. Whether it is the church's devotional or any other. Read! And ultimately, the intake of God's Word empowers you to do this:
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then. Ephesians 6:10-14 [Emphasis added.]
Your Sword can never be too sharp!
"The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." Matthew 7:25
