The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”  John 4:25

Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”  John 4:26

“It’s too good to be true.” Isn’t that a sad phrase? The reason it is such a common phrase is that we humans rarely find situations where everyone wins, where everyone is happy, where it is a happily ever after. It often feels like every good thing has a shadow side. I think it is sad, because life beats us up so much that we begin to think that there is no such thing as pure joy.

In Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well, she begins to speak of an abstract idea of a savior who will rescue people. She speaks of the idea in the abstract, but what Jesus says sounds way too good to be true. He says, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.” Jesus is the ultimate source of joy, salvation, meaning, and of all things. It seems too good to be true. If there is any desire in your heart, it is fulfilled in him. If you have any longing, is it a fill-in longing for a deeper longing for Jesus?

What is that for you? What do you most long for? Do you want a better job? Do you want a better relationship? Do you long for meaning and purpose? Do you long for family or friends? Every one of those longings is a small part of a deeper desire that Jesus meets. What if today you hear the voice of Jesus saying, “I, the one speaking to you – I am he who will meet your needs?”
