Mark 15:34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
I don’t often think about Jesus enduring the agonizingly painful separation from His Heavenly Father. The One with whom He enjoyed perfect relationship since before time. The trinity fractured. For the first time ever.
Can you imagine? Jesus, the most worthy of being loved, the perfect man, sinless, compassionate, servant, full of grace and truth. Forsaken. Left alone. Rejected.
Since Jesus experienced tremendous loneliness, the pain of feeling rejected, and the depths of human experience, He is absolutely able to relate to you. To me. Jesus sees our hurt. He is not only acquainted with our pain, but He came to redeem it.
Because of the redemption Jesus purchased for us on the cross, we will never have to experience the ultimate, worst kind of loneliness: eternal separation from God. Romans 8:28-29 says this, “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Praise the Lord, what good news!
How will you respond to the good news today? Here are some ideas to choose from:
- Write a poem or a song expressing gratitude to your Savior for enduring separation from God for you, for speaking words of comfort in your loneliness.
- Reach out to a friend who is experiencing loneliness right now.
- Take a walk today and pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. It’s okay to ask Him ‘why?’ Jesus did it! And He even knew the answer.
