We have sung of God’s faithfulness throughout generations in the Church. Since 2019 we’ve been singing of His “goodness” through the Bethel Worship song, “Goodness of God.” The first lines, “I Love you, Lord…” cut straight to the “why” of worship for many of us. In addition to worshiping out of awe and reverence; we worship because we love God.
This OT scripture comes to mind when singing this song:
Exodus 33:19
And the Lord said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
These Psalms come to mind when singing this song:
Psalm 3:5
I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
Psalm 27:13
I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living.
Psalm 31:15
My times are in your hands;
deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
from those who pursue me.
And finally, this NT scripture comes to mind when singing this song:
Luke 15:20
“So he got up and went to his father.
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”
As we return to the Father, we know God’s sovereignty and love is greater than we’ll ever know or understand; and so we sing this song to convey gratitude and hope to ourselves, our community and to our Savior.
Did you know it came from Jenn Johnson singing it into her phone? Jenn found herself driving on a long country road during the adoption process of their son, Ryder Moses. (which means ‘adopted deliverer’). She recorded the song into her phone about the “faithfulness” and “kindness of God” [shared from Joy99 interview article],
Lyrics
I love You, Lord
For Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
‘Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In darkest night You are close like no other
I’ve known You as a Father
I’ve known You as a Friend
And I have lived in the goodness of God, yeah
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
With my life laid down, I surrendered now
I give You everything, oh Lord
Your goodness is running after, it’s running after me
